5 WordPress Pages You should NOINDEX Right Now for better SEO

wordpress pages noindex for seo

I’ve been reading a lot of articles these days related to Duplicate content issues with WordPress sites and how they are affected by Google. Duplicate content may exist on your site even without your knowledge. You might have noticed that  articles posted on your site are listed in all the related archives. For ex, your articles will be listed in Date Based Archives, Categories Based Archive and Tag-Based archives. There are chances that Google might consider it as a duplicate content since the same content is present in more than 1 URL in your site and may even penalize you for that.  Along with this, duplicate content may also affect your search engine rankings. For example,  a tag based archive page related to your original post may rank higher than your actual post. This isn’t a good practice according to many SEO experts and should be fixed right now and it can be done with a simple ‘noindex’ robot tag.

In this article, we’ll be listing 5 WordPress Pages which shouldn’t be Indexed in Google search Engines. Since you’re on WordPress, you don’t need to put “noindex” tag on every required page. All you need to do is download the Yoast SEO Plugin and the rest will be taken care of by Yoast itself.

Once you’ve Installed Yoast SEO plugin on your website (of if you already have it Installed), you are ready for the procedure below.

Tag Based Archives

Tag Based Archives will display all the post categories by a particular tag assigned to that post. It is highly recommended to put a noindex tag to these archives as they can easily create duplicate content issues for your WordPress site.

To do this, simply login to your WordPress Dashboard > SEO > Titles & Metas

Now click on “Taxonomies” tab and then you’ll find an option to put a NOINDEX tag to your Tag archives.

Author Based Archives

In Author Based archives, all the post will be listed according to a specific author of the blog. That means, all the posts, irrespective of categories and tags will be listed here for that specific author. Since there this page isn’t of much importance, you can put a noindex tag right away.

Click on the “Archives” tab under “Title & Metas” setting to find the option.

Date Based Archives

In Date Based archives, all the posts are listed and categories according to the dates. These archieves may be helpful for event based blogs but indexing them in Google Search engines isn’t a good practice. Hence, you should definitely noindex date based archives.

Click on the “Archives” tab under “Title & Metas” setting to find the option.

Staff/Authors List Page

If your WordPress site has a page listing all the authors/staff of your website. You should consider putting a noindex tag on that page. Since indexing that page in Google Search won’t make much difference, you can put a noindex tag right away.

You can put noindex WordPress pages by editing the page itself. You’ll be able to find the option for this in the Yoast SEO Meta Box below the page editor panel.

Privacy Policy Page

Privacy policy page is meant for the visitors and not for Google. No one is Interested in checking out your Privacy page through Google Search (until he is really Interested). Although this isn’t necessary but you can still consider it as a part of your noindex campaign.

You can follow the procedure similar to the one you followed for Staff/Authors List page.

Special Mentions

Category based archives may be useful for some niche websites but if you still feel that it isn’t productive for your website, you can put a noindex tag on category based archives too. You should remember that in order to rank your original content better in search engines, you should avoid indexing pages which aren’t of much use. Hence, it will allow Google to put more weight on your original content pages rather than duplicate archives.
